Created by the WCCF to honor John L.S. Northrop and William B. Northrop, Sr. as the 2002 Philanthropists of the Year.
The Northrops consider community service and philanthropic giving a family tradition. In the local area, they have supported Washington & Jefferson College, United Way of Washington County, PA Trolley Museum, Washington City Mission, Washington Literacy Council, Mel Blount Youth Home, Peters Township Library, The Formation Academy, ABCDEF, and the Washington County Community Foundation. It is for their outstanding commitment to the Washington community that the WCCF named the Northrops Philanthropists of the Year.
John and Bill were co-owners of the Observer Reporter until their retirement in June of 2002. Prior to directing the family business, the Northrops both graduated from Washington & Lee University and were past presidents of the Pennsylvania Newspapers Association.
Grants made from the Northrop Family Fund will be recommended by the Northrop family and will benefit charitable organizations within Washington County.
