The Burgettstown Jr. Sr. High School Student Council, with the assistance of their advisor, Ms. Mary Elaine Lozosky, initiated a scholarship fund in 1999 at the Washington County Community Foundation to provide scholarships to future leaders of Burgettstown High School. To raise money for the scholarship fund, the students conducted various activities which included a letter writing campaign to local individuals, businesses and Burgettstown alumni.
Annually, the scholarship fund has provided a financial award in conjunction with the presentation of the Distinguished Service Award at Burgettstown High School. To honor Ms. Lozosky for her many years serving as the Student Council Advisor, the award was renamed to the Mary Elaine Lozosky Distinguished Service Award in 2024.
