A fondness for community theatre and arts was always at the heart of the Hitchon family.
Larry and Marjorie Hitchon enjoyed attending events at local community theatres in and around Washington County together, as well as with their three children: Lawrence, Ginney, and Timothy. Larry particularly loved anything musical, and it was not unusual to hear him humming along, even if he did not know the song.
Larry grew up in Uniontown, PA. He studied restaurant management at Cornell University, and after graduation, he moved to Washington, PA. While running the local Howard Johnson's, Larry met Marjorie. The couple wed in 1960 and decided to make their home in this community.
Larry was active in the local Rotary Club, serving in various leadership roles for a few years. He retired young to spend more time with his family and to travel, and then later he had a second career with the IRS in taxpayer assistance.
A life-long resident of Washington County, Marjorie attended Washington High School. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom while her children were young. Once they were grown, Marjorie graduated from California University of Pennsylvania (now PennWest California) with a teaching degree. She loved teaching students of all ages about computers, both as a substitute teacher in the local schools and in the neighborhood.
In honor of their family's love of music and the arts, the Lawrence and Marjorie Hitchon Fund was created to help music and theatre programs in Washington County. It is hoped that this support will provide opportunities for individuals and families to enjoy both participating in and observing the arts.
