The Burgettstown Lions Club Scholarship Fund was initiated by the Burgettstown Lions Club in 2006. The three scholarships it awards annually will benefit graduating seniors from Burgettstown Area High School.
The motto of the Lions Club is “We Serve,” and as per that belief, students selected for these scholarships are chosen based, not only on their academic and extra curricular successes, but also on their leadership abilities, character, and their willingness to serve others.
The Lions Memorial Scholarship is a minimum award of $500, and is given in memory of past members of the Burgettstown Lions Club who have served the organization and the community with pride and selflessness.
The recipient of the Harold Malone Science Scholarship is awarded a minimum of $250, and is someone who has excelled in the sciences at Burgettstown High School and plans to pursue a degree in a science-related field.
The Manuel “Mud” Garcia Scholarship is a minimum award of $250, and is given in memory of Burgettstown Lions Club member Mud Garcia. Recipients must be active in community service.
When asked why the Lions Club decided to create the Fund, Cheryl Englert responded, "Our Club has been providing these scholarships for many years, not only as a service to the Burgettstown community, but to honor several individuals who were very active in our Club. We wanted to ensure the awards will continue forever and the Foundation provides the perpetuity we were seeking."
